According to a Global Fund press release, this amount “will save 8 million lives, avert 300 million infections and help build resilient and sustainable systems for health.”
The money was raised during the Global Fund’s Fifth Replenishment Conference, held recently in Montreal. The conference raised $1 billion more than the previous one, held in 2013, and marks the beginning of the three-year replenishment cycle.
The United States pledged $4.3 billion, the highest of donors, followed by the United Kingdom and France. The Global Fund notes that more lower- and middle-income countries are increasing their donations. For example, Kenya has pledged $5 million.
What’s more, pledges from private donors and initiatives more than doubled from 2013, to a total of $250 million.
“We can end these epidemics for good, if we accelerate our efforts and continue to bring in new partners,” said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during his remarks at the conference.
