Assembly member Evan Low: 'Our taxpayer dollars will not help fund bigotry and hatred'
California has banned travel by
California state employees to North Carolina, Mississippi and other
states that enact discriminatory laws after June 2015.
The new law, signed by California Governor Jerry Brown on Tuesday (27 September), applies to non-essential, state-funded travel and covers states that enact new LGBTI laws in the future.
‘California has said clearly, our taxpayer dollars will not help fund bigotry and hatred,’ said Assemblymember Evan Low who authored the legislation.
‘If other states try and pass similar laws, we will work to stop them. Our zero-tolerance policy says there is no room for discrimination of any kind in California, and AB 1887 ensures that discrimination will not be tolerated beyond our borders.’
California, which has the world’s sixth largest economy, is the first state in the US to pass a law through its legislature banning travel to states with laws that discriminate against LGBTI people.
The law was sponsored by Equality California and the National Center for Lesbian Rights.
Equality California Executive Director Rick Zbur says the law sends ‘a strong message that bigotry against LGBT people is costly. It provides a strong disincentive to states that may be considering adopting anti-LGBT laws similar to North Carolina’s HB 2.’
Seen as backlash to last year’s US Supreme Court ruling in favor of marriage equality, more than 200 pieces of anti-LGBTI legislation are currently making their way through state legislatures across the country.
North Carolina’s HB2 is the most controversial of such laws already passed.
It diminishes workplace protections for LGBTI people including blocking local governments from passing anti-discrimination laws and requires transgender citizens to use public restrooms according to their birth certificate gender.
