An explosion occurred tonight (17 September) in Chelsea, a LGBTI friendly New York City neighborhood.
Authorities held a press conference approximately 3 hours after the incident occurred, which was approximately 8:30 PM (EST). New York Police Department Commissioner James O’Neill said the explosion happened at 131 West 23rd Street, between Sixth and Seventh Avenues. The explosion was witnessed by officers; 29 people were injured, 24 transported to hospital. The majority of the injuries are not life threatening, but one is serious.
Mayor Bill de Blasio called the explosion an ‘intentional act’, but shied from calling it a terror attack.
‘No evidence at this point to a terror connection,’ the mayor said. ‘No credible threat to New York City at this moment.’
There are also multiple reports of the discovery of a second device, four blocks away on 27th Street. Authorities added the investigation is ongoing.
UPDATE: New York City Councilmember Corey Johnson, who represents the neighborhood, is using his Twitter account to provide information. The out politician posted the following about the second device:
Police spokesman J. Peter Donald said on Twitter that the explosion
happened at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday on West 23rd Street in the Chelsea
section of Manhattan. He says several people were taken to hospitals
with injuries. The Fire Department tweeted that none of the injuries
appear to be life-threatening.
No detail about the extent of damage was immediately available.
Chris Gonzalez, visiting from Dallas, was having dinner with friends at a restaurant. The 26-year-old says she heard and felt a blast. She said the restaurant went quiet.
Witnesses say FBI and Homeland Security officials are also at the scene.
The reports of a possible blast come hours after a pipe bomb exploded in Seaside Park, New Jersey, shortly before thousands of runners participated in a charity 5K race to benefit Marines and sailors.
