Germany’s most famous drag queen is pressing charges against a right-wing party for comparing gay people to pedophiles.
Olivia Jones said she’s ‘had enough’ in a statement on her website on Thursday (15 September), addressed at the Alternative for Germany (AfD).
The drag queen, a staple in Hamburg’s gay scene and who dubs as RuPaul’s voice in the German broadcast of Drag Race, filed charges against chairman for the AfD’s Saxony-Anhalt branch André Poggenburg.
Earlier this month, the federal state’s Ministry of Equality published a leaflet aimed at nurseries and primary schools, recommending a number of age-appropriate books about homosexuality and same-sex relationships.
In response, the AfD Saxony-Anhalt published a statement in which Poggenburg claimed it would endanger children’s welfare and mental and emotional integrity.
Together with the statement, they also posted a picture which Jones says puts education about homosexuality and pedophilia in close connection.
Headlined ‘new educational reading for children’, AFD published the image of a book that said ‘write down your seven erotic scenarios with an adult’.
On the left page, above the picture of a rainbow, it reads ‘how can I have sex as a child? Five steps, easily explained’, with the addition of ‘today: here’s why you’re actually homo’.
‘Yes, you’re allowed to have different opinions in a democracy, and I’m doing my best to take even the – in my opinion – most absurd fears seriously,’ Jones wrote.
‘But when homosexuality is linked to pedophilia, on the AfD Saxony-Anhalt’s party and faction Facebook page, then that’s not a question of differing opinions, for me, but hate speech.’
Jones said even if people should argue the post was satirical, she still couldn’t laugh about it.
‘Millions of people had to, and still have to, suffer under such “humor”,’ she said.
‘People who didn’t choose their homosexuality, who weren’t “made”, but born, gay.’
In a bid to show how easy it is to teach children about alternative relationships, she offered to send a copy of her own book to the faction’s office – and said she’d even stop by to read it out loud, if need be.
‘How is it children’s fault if you, as adults, always have to think of sex when talking about love,’ she said.
‘So: think first, then talk, don’t always lump everything together and keep a sense of proportion, for once – or it won’t be long until we have the next stake.
‘The world needs firefighters. We have enough arsonists already.
‘So stop playing with fire already.’

The AfD's post claims the ministry promotes the early sexualization of children and links homosexuality and pedophilia. |
