HIV Docs Can Learn the Latest Science With This Teaching Tool

The nation’s largest independent group of HIV care providers—the American Academy of HIV Medicine (AAHIVM)—has created a web-based resource for fellow providers that covers both the basics of HIV and the newest advances in clinical care, according to an AAHIVM press release.

The online resource is called the AAHIVM Core Curriculum in HIV Care, Prevention and Treatment. It can also be used as a study guide for HIV specialists and pharmacists preparing for crendentialing exams and as a tool for students, fellows and residents.

“One of our principle ‘raisons d’etre’ as an Academy for HIV providers is to make sure that the domestic HIV workforce has ongoing access to core competency trainings in HIV and its co-morbidities,” said AAHIVM deputy director Bruce Packett in the press release. “We have keenly tailored this core resource to the educational needs [of] existing HIV-specializing clinicians, to primary care providers who are treating and preventing HIV in their practices, and to the next generation of the HIV workforce.”

The online curriculum consists of 16 learning modules, with content based on the publication titled AAHIVM Fundamentals of HIV Medicine. The sections include:

• HIV Transmission Prevention

• Immunology

• Overview of ARV Therapy

• Classes of ARV Medications

• Initiation of ARV Therapy

• Multidrug-Resistant HIV

• ART for Special Populations

• Antiretroviral Resistance

• Understanding PK and PD

• Renal Comorbidity

• Bone Complications of HIV

• CV Complications of HIV

• Neurologic Complications

• Hepatic Coinfection
