The seven deadly sins were first compiled by Pope Gregory I around the year 600. They are pride, greed, lust, wrath, gluttony, envy, and sloth. Gregory also compiled a list of the seven virtues: faith, hope, charity, justice, prudence, temperance, and fortitude. The Bible would validate all of these concepts, but nowhere are they recorded in a list like this and nowhere in the Bible are they specifically referred to as the seven deadly sins or seven virtues. They do not pre-date the Ten Commandments which were given at Mt. Sinai around 1450 B.C. It is probably true that they were used extensively to teach principles from God's Word, particularly in the centuries before the invention of the printing press when the Bible was not available for the common man to read and study.
7 Deadly Sins List
& Meanings
1.
Envy = the desire to have an item or
experience that someone else possesses
2.
Gluttony = excessive ongoing
consumption of food or drink
3.
Greed or Avarice = an excessive pursuit
of material possessions
4.
Lust = an uncontrollable passion or
longing, especially for sexual desires
5.
Pride = excessive view of one's self
without regard to others.
6.
Sloth = excessive laziness or the
failure to act and utilize one’s talents
7.
Wrath = uncontrollable feelings of
anger and hate towards another person
The following is a
listing of the seven virtues and how they cure each of the seven deadly sins:
1.
Kindness = cures envy by placing the
desire to help others above the need to supersede them
2.
Temperance = cures gluttony by
implanting the desire to be healthy, therefore making one fit to serve others
3.
Charity or love = cures greed by
putting the desire to help others above storing up treasure for one’s self
4.
Chastity or Self-control = cures lust
by controlling passion and leveraging that energy for the good of others
5.
Humility = cures pride by removing
one's ego and boastfulness, therefore allowing the attitude of service
6.
Diligence or Zeal = cures slothfulness
by placing the best interest of others above the life of ease and relaxation.
7.
Patience = cures wrath by taking time
to understand the needs and desires of others before acting or speaking.
The following are Sins
Listed in the Bible:
Proverbs 6:16-19, "These six
things the Lord hates, yes, seven are an abomination to Him:
1. A proud look,
2. A lying tongue,
3. Hands that shed innocent blood,
4. A heart that devises wicked plans,
5. Feet that are swift in running to evil,
6. A false witness who speaks lies,
7. And one who sows discord among brethren.”
Galatians 5:19-21 mentions several
more sins to be on our guard against: "Now the deeds of the flesh are
evident, which are:
1.
Immorality
2.
Impurity
3.
Sensuality
4.
Idolatry
5.
Sorcery
6.
Enmities
7.
Strife
8.
Jealousy
9.
Outbursts
of anger
10.
Disputes
11.
Dissensions
12.
Factions
13.
Envying
14.
Drunkenness
15.
Carousing
and things like these, of which I
forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such
things will not inherit the kingdom of God."
As Children of God we should be
exhibiting Virtues that are godly and NOT the above Impurities.
Here
is a list of Virtues and Scripture Reading that would be good Virtues to live
your life by:
9 Biblical Virtues
1. Faith - Ephesians 1:11-23
2. Hope - Psalm 71
3. Love - 1 John 3:11-20
4. Wisdom - 1 Corinthians 1:18-31
5. Justice - Isaiah 61
6. Courage - Daniel 3
7. Moderation - Ecclesiastes 2:1-11
8. Integrity - 1 Samuel 24
9. Perseverance - Philippians 3:7-16
And here are Virtues that our Lord Jesus would like for us to live
our lives by:
1.
Faith
Jesus fully trusted in his heavenly Father,
and showed his complete faith at Gethsemane when he, contemplating his imminent
crucifixion, prayed, "Not my will but yours be done"
2.
Moral excellence
Jesus lived without sin —a truly amazing
accomplishment. He was able to look people in the eye and say, "Which of
you convicts me of sin?"
3.
Knowledge
Even in his
boyhood Jesus was already able to discuss the law of God and spiritual things
with the religious teachers at the temple. They were impressed with the
knowledge and insight he had gained though so young.
4.
Temperance
As Jesus cleansed the temple, he showed
righteous anger with great self control. He did not lose his temper. He did not
revile, nor yet resile. He acted deliberately with temperance, courage, and
authority.
Note —TEMPLE CLEANSED: There were two
occasions on which Jesus drove people from the temple. The first is recorded in
John 2:13-22, the second in Matthew 21:12-13.
5.
Patience
When Jesus was subjected to unjust abuse in
corrupt court proceedings, he never retaliated or weakened, but endured with
forbearance and long suffering, in contrast to the impatience and outbursts of
his false accusers.
6.
Godliness
Jesus showed godliness in everything, but as
one example, on a certain night, in deadly circumstance, at a time for
decision, Jesus chose not go to bed. Instead he went off to the mountain where
he spent a whole night in prayer.
7.
Brotherly Kindness
After his resurrection Jesus appears to his
disciples who have spent the night fishing unsuccessfully. Jesus lights a fire
by the lake shore and starts cooking a breakfast for them of fish and bread.
8.
Love
On the cross and in agony, Jesus still had
thought and care for his mother, and thus showed "the love of Christ"
which fills the hearts of all who seek to know him (Ephesians 3:17-19).
Love is the very CORE of Jesus'
Ministry while here on the Earth. When studying the Word of God we read about
the Greatest of all the things one could possess as a person who pleases the
Lord. The Greatest of all the VIRTUES is LOVE.
1 Corinthians 13 tells us of the LOVE we should have for each other and what
the VIRTUES of LOVE are:
1.
Love is
patient
2.
Love is
kind
3.
It does
not envy
4.
It does
not boast
5.
It is not
proud
6.
It does
not dishonor others
7.
It is not
self-seeking
8.
It is not
easily angered
9.
It keeps
no record of wrongs
10. Love does not delight in evil
11. Love rejoices with the truth
12. It always protects
13. It always trusts
14. It always hopes
15. It always perseveres.
As LGBTQ Children of God we are
often told we are SINNERS and that we are going to HELL if we do not change who
we are, to become something that we are NOT. However, GOD did NOT make a
mistake when He created you LGBTQ. If you believe the WORD of GOD then you
should live your LGBTQ life in accord with the VIRTUES our Lord and Savior want
us to live.
Jesus made it very clear that ALL
who believe in HIM will have ever lasting life.
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who
believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing
in me will never die. John 11:25-26
It is time as LGBTQ people of the
Lord that we study the WORD of GOD to show ourselves approved before GOD not
MANKIND.
Do your best to
present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be
ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15
Meditate on these things every day
and may the LOVE of our Savior JESUS RULE in your life.
