At the Republican National Convention, Ted Cruz went on stage and advised people to “Vote your conscience.”
The anti-LGBT Texas Senator refused to endorse Trump at the time, but on Friday Cruz reversed his position. Cruz told his followers that after many months of prayer and searching for his conscience, he decided that he will be voting for Trump in November.
Cruz mentioned two precise reasons why he is now supporting Trump: he is a proud supporter of the #NeverHillary movement and he wants to keep his word on a statement he made last year that he would support whoever became the Republican nominee.
"Even though I have had areas of significant disagreement with our nominee, by any measure Hillary Clinton is wholly unacceptable," wrote Cruz. The Texas Senator noted six key policies that helped him decide to support Trump. He cited the Supreme Court as the most important reason that all voters should stand behind Trump. "We are only one justice away from losing our most basic rights, and the next president will appoint as many as four new justices," said Senator Cruz. Cruz also mentioned that for anyone invested in upholding the right to 'religious liberty,' they should vote for Trump.
"We know, without a doubt, that every Clinton appointee would be a left-wing ideologue. Trump, in contrast, has promised to appoint justices 'in the mold of Scalia,'" said Cruz.
The five other key policy differences that Cruz cited include Obamacare, energy, immigration, national security, and internet freedom.
Trump spoke out in support of 'religious liberty' Thursday, when he announced the launch of a Catholic Advisory Group for his campaign.
"Religious liberty is enshrined in the First Amendment to the Constitution. It is our first liberty and provides the most important protection in that it protects our right of conscience. Activist judges and executive orders issued by Presidents who have no regard for the Constitution have put these protections in jeopardy. If I am elected president and Congress passes the First Amendment Defense Act, I will sign it to protect the deeply held religious beliefs of Catholics and the beliefs of Americans of all faiths. The Little Sisters of the Poor, or any religious order for that matter, will always have their religious liberty protected on my watch and will not have to face bullying from the government because of their religious beliefs," wrote Trump, on his website.
Friday Republican presidential nominee Trump announced 10 judges he would nominate for the Supreme Court. Many of the judges on the list have an anti-LGBT record.
