Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump almost got through his
first debate with Hillary Clinton without a single mention of his old
nemesis Rosie O’Donnell.
But in the final moments of the face-off at Hofstra University in New York on Monday (26 September),Clinton brought up some of Trump’s various insults at women over the years and her rival saw an opening,
‘This is a man who has called women pigs, slobs and dogs,’ Clinton said, pointing out that Trump also called a former Miss Universe Miss Housekeeping ‘because she was Latina.’
Trump replied: ‘Rosie O’Donnell, I said very tough things to her and I think everyone would agree that she deserves it and nobody feels sorry for her.’
Trump had in the past called O’Donnell a ‘slob,’ said she is ‘disgusting both inside and out’ and said he might sue her to ‘take some money out of her fat ass pockets.’
O’Donnell said in an April interview that Trump is ‘the worst representation of what the United States is or could be.’
‘He is everything we should reject as a nation,’ the out actress and comic said in a chat with WABC Radio’s Election Central with Rita Cosby. ‘He’s not even qualified to run a game show.’
O’Donnell has had a public feud with Trump dating back nearly a decade when she made a mockery of him on ABC’s The View for his handling of an incident involving the Miss Universe pageant which he owns.
During the first Republican presidential debate in August 2015, moderator Megyn Kelly asked Trump about his various insults aimed at women over the years.
‘You’ve called women you don’t like fat pigs, dogs, slobs and disgusting animals,’ Kelly began before being interrupted by Trump who said: ‘Only Rosie O’Donnell.’
O’Donnell says she was ‘surprised’ he brought her up in the election ‘as a punchline with impunity.’
